Today DaVita Kidney Care, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc., announced their 2014 results of the end stage renal disease (ESRD) Quality Incentive Program (QIP) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). According to the results, DaVita dialysis centers outperformed all other dialysis providers in all categories. In fact, 98.4% of the company’s centers ranked in the top clinical performance tier.
Because of the aging population and increased amount of diabetic patients, every year more people are receiving dialysis services. Renal dialysis, sometimes referred to as kidney dialysis, is the process of filtering excess fluid and toxins from the blood. Patients sometimes have the option of visiting a facility, like DaVita dialysis centers, to receive their dialysis treatment or use home-based dialysis treatment options. Receiving dialysis is a stressful procedure, which is why DaVita has committed to improving their procedures, staffing, and overall treatment services to give patients a more comfortable experience.
Kent Thiry, DaVita HealthCare Partners CEO says that continuous improvement of the quality of care delivered in DaVita dialysis centers is at the center of the company’s agenda. “As part of our culture of continuous improvement, we are working with members of the kidney care community and CMS to improve care for our patients,” he said.
QIP is part of Medicare’s ESRD quality incentive program whose goal is to improve the quality of care to Medicare patients. It was passed into law in 2008 through a series of reforms and was the nation’s first pay-for-performance quality incentive program. When scoring DaVita dialysis centers on their performance, QIP takes into account three clinical areas: vascular access management, anemia management and urea reduction ratio. By the end of 2012 DaVita reported that only 0.6% of all its patients were below the 65 percent baseline.
DaVita Dialysis Centers and Their Holistic Approach
DaVita attributes much of their success to their holistic approach to dialysis treatment. DaVita dialyiss centers focus on individual patients rather than cookie-cutter service plans. Highly trained staff, such as dialysis technicians, have demonstrated improved outcomes in several critical areas, including vascular access. “The QIP results demonstrate that DaVita’s holistic, comprehensive care approach works,” said Thiry.
